Boy Mauled By Chimps Has 'Ground-Breaking' Op

Dunia Sibomana was able to sip a spoonful of chicken soup after recovering from a rare 14-hour procedure last month to repair his lips at a hospital in Long Island in New York State.
The operation - scheduled to take eight hours but extended because of complications - has also allowed Dunia, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, to keep food inside his mouth, speak more clearly and stop constant drooling.
Dunia was the only survivor in a group of three boys attacked by chimpanzees two years ago.

His lips were ripped off, one cheek was torn apart and he suffered muscle damage that made it difficult for him to eat, swallow or speak.
Dr Leon Klempner, a dentist who assisted on the operation and is the founder of the charity that brought Dunia to the US, said: "Amazing doesn't really encompass what was done in that room.
"This was ground-breaking surgery to restore both upper and lower lips and what I watched was skilled surgeons under a microscope sewing arteries to arteries, sutchering together, bringing nerves and veins together. This was pretty remarkable.
"This is the first of a series of surgeries. From looking at him, there's significant improvement already."
Dunia Sibomana, who was attacked two years ago by chimpanzees in his village in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is carried into a play room by his host family mother Jennifer Crean at Stony Brook Children's Hospital, New York
Alexander Dagum, lead surgeon at Stony Brook Children's Hospital, said he was surprised by how much his patient can move his lips and said "everything's healing very nicely".
Dunia, who became shy and withdrawn after his disfigurement, will need more surgery this year and is staying with an American family while he undergoes treatment, which has been given for free by charity SmileRescueFund.org.
Soon after he awoke from surgery he called out: "Home - I need home! Ziggy!"
Ziggy is the name of the dog owned by the Crean family, with whom he is staying.
The charity has raised enough funds to pay for him to go to boarding school when he gets home.

Jay Z's Label Roc Nation Sues Rita Ora

The civil lawsuit has been filed in New York just six weeks after the British star sued Roc Nation in Los Angeles.
Ora claims she was pushed aside by executives and that the agreement she signed in 2008 at the age of 18 violated California law.
The X Factor judge has only released one album with the label, her self-titled debut in 2012.
Roc Nation claims it has spent $2.4m on her and has "tirelessly promoted [her] career, investing millions of dollars in marketing, recording and other costs, which was instrumental in guiding Ms Ora to her current level of success and fame".
However, a second album has failed to materialise despite Ora reportedly signing a five-album deal.
Page Six in the New York Post quoted Ora's lawyer, Howard King, who said: "Jay Z has personally and graciously promised Rita complete freedom from Roc Nation, the details of which are now being finalised.
"We believe that Roc Nation's distributor, Sony Music, has required Roc Nation to file this action to preserve whatever rights Sony might have pending resolution."

Indian Court Rules That Hindu Women Can Now Be the Head of Their Own Families

In a significant decision Monday, a top court in India’s capital city New Delhi ruled that women are eligible to become the legal head of a family, a position hitherto reserved only for the eldest male.
The Delhi High Court verdict said there is “no restriction” on a woman becoming a family’s karta— a role demarcated by ancient Hindu customs and scripture that defines the manager of a joint family, the Times of Indiareported.
The karta assumes a preeminent position within the family, which comes with the authority to handle its rituals, property, assets and other key matters.
According to the Times, Monday’s ruling in Delhi was the result of a lawsuit filed by the eldest daughter of one of the city’s business families, whose father was the eldest of four brothers. Following the deaths of all four, her cousin — the eldest son of a younger brother — had claimed he was the rightful karta.
However, the Delhi court’s Justice Najmi Waziri said: “If a male member of a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), by virtue of his being the first-born eldest, can be a karta, so can a female member.”
The decision follows (and, according to the court, is based on the precedent set by) a 2005 amendment to the South Asian nation’s Hindu Succession Act allowing women previously denied equal inheritance rights.

Rough Commute? Spare a Thought for These Chinese New Year Travelers

Commuters worldwide should spare a thought for travelers in China trying to escape the country’s megacities for the Chinese New Year holiday.
Pictures and video showed massive crowds stuck at least two major train stations on Monday, the most severe in the southern city of Guangzhou, where more than 100,000 people became trapped.
Long delays to train services were caused by snowy weather in other provinces, according to the South China Morning Post, which reported that more than 2,600 guards had been deployed to deal with the crowds.
Commuters were also packed tightly into one of Shanghai’s main railway stations because of delayed trains.
Many of China’s roughly 250 million migrant laborers return to their home provinces for the Spring Festival and the start of the Year of the Monkey on Feb. 8.
