Cancer Cases In Children Leap By 40% In 16 Years

Fast food diets and lack of exercise could be responsible for a rise in cancer cases in young adults, scientists have warned.
Alasdair Philips, science adviser at Children with Cancer UK, says there seems to be "a correlation between the lifestyle of young people" and a significant increase in the number of teenagers being diagnosed.
"They tend to be doing a lot less exercise and there's also a lot of fast food being eaten, which is fine in moderation, but we know they do contain cancer giving substances," he said.
"So if you eat well-cooked meat and burgers and it goes into your colon and hangs around because you're not doing much exercise, it's more likely to cause damage. I think that's part of the issue."
New analysis of official ONS statistics by Children with Cancer UK shows how diagnosis has increased by 40% in the last 16 years, with 1,300 more cases of young people getting cancer each year.
The stark rise is most evident in colon cancer which is up by 200% and thyroid cancer which has more than doubled.
"One of the rises that has taken us a bit by surprise is this rise in colon cancer which wasn't a young persons cancer.

"Only last week the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which is part of the World Health Organisation, said they'd found a relationship between obesity and too much sugar - and colon and thyroid cancer."
Children with Cancer UK says "more money and more research" is needed to examine the causes.
Around 4,000 children and young people develop cancer each year in the UK and it is the leading cause of death in children aged one to 14.
Charlotte Hutchinson, 23, was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of 13. She told Sky News that enduring two years of chemotherapy while trying to cope with the pressures of being a teenager was not easy.
"Obviously getting cancer at any age is never going to be easy, but as a teenager it is tough because you don't expect to get it." she said.
"As a 13/14 year old you expect to be hanging out with your friends and just being a normal teenager - and it definitely has a knock-on effect."

Jackie Chan to Receive Lifetime Achievement Oscar

Hong Kong-born action star Jackie Chan will receive a lifetime achievement Oscar recognizing his lifetime contribution to film at a gala in Los Angeles in November.

Chan, 62, will join documentary maker Frederick Wiseman, British film editor Anne V. Coates and casting director Lynn Stalmaster as recipients of the 2016 Governors Awards, Reuters reports.

The Rush Hour star was the second highest paid actor this year, according to Forbes, cashing in $61 million thanks to his still-soaring popularity in China’s movie markets. The former wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was the highest paid, taking home a full $64.5 million.

Born in Hong Kong in 1954 and trained as a martial artist from childhood, Chan’s first major film breakthrough in 1978 gave rise to the new genre of comic kung fu. Lauded by martial arts fans as the new Bruce Lee, he quickly became the highest paid Asian star in the American film industry, pocketing $1 million for Warner Bros’ The Big Brawl.

May Says It's A 'Golden Era' For China-UK Relations As She Heads To G20 Summit

The Prime Minister has said it is a "golden era" for UK-China relations, despite a row with Beijing over the delayed Hinkley Point nuclear power station.
As she headed to China for the G20 summit, Theresa May also insisted Britain will be a "global leader" for free trade following Brexit.
Speaking at Heathrow before boarding an RAF plane to Hangzhou in eastern China, she said: "The message for the G20 is that Britain is open for business, as a bold, confident, outward-looking country we will be playing a key role on the world stage."
Ahead of talks with President Xi Jinping, she said: "This is a golden era for UK-China relations and one of the things I will be doing at the G20 is obviously talking to president Xi about how we can develop the strategic partnership that we have between the UK and China.
"But I will also be talking to other world leaders about how we can develop free trade around the world and Britain wants to seize those opportunities.
"My ambition is that Britain will be a global leader in free trade."
Mrs May added: "I will be talking to other world leaders about the opportunities for trade around the globe that will open up for Britain following Brexit.
"I will be talking about how Britain will be seizing those opportunities."
The PM hopes to use the summit, where she will have discussions with world leaders including US President Barack Obama, to show the UK remains a "dependable" diplomatic and trading partner after the vote to leave the European Union.

Although she will hold face-to-face talks with Mr Xi, Mrs May is not expected to use the meeting to make an announcement on Hinkley Point, a project backed by Beijing's state-owned nuclear firm.
Mrs May will hold talks with Mr Xi on Monday, after the end of the two-day G20 summit of leaders of the world's richest nations.
Although a decision on whether or not Hinkley Point in Somerset will go ahead is expected later this month, UK officials have indicated it would not be announced at the meeting.
This has fuelled speculation the project will be scrapped or significantly changed.
The French energy firm EDF, with support from China General Nuclear, had expected to build the £18bn plant, but Mrs May signalled a delay in making a final decision amid reported security concerns about Beijing's involvement and the high cost of energy from the power station.
Mrs May will also hold her first face-to-face talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the PM expected to adopt an approach of "hard-headed engagement" with Moscow.
She will also meet her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, with the trading relationship expected to dominate the agenda.

'I Resurrected': Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe Laughs Off Health Fears

Robert Mugabe has arrived back in Zimbabwe following rumours he was seriously ill and had travelled to Dubai for treatment.
The 92-year-old president, who is Africa's oldest leader, looked jovial as he left his aircraft with security aides on Saturday, having left a regional summit on Tuesday.
"I had gone on a family matter to Dubai concerning one of my children," he told reporters, without giving details.

Mr Mugabe then joked: "Yes, I was dead, it's true I was dead. I resurrected as I always do. Once I get back to my country I am real."
The Zimbabwean leader is expected to address a youth meeting at his party's headquarters later on Saturday.
Reports that Mr Mugabe's health is on the decline have become common, but he has often said he is as "fit as fiddle".

He intends to run again in elections in 2018, and his wife, Grace, recently said he would rule from the grave.
Political opponents say Mugabe has brought one of Africa's most promising economies to its knees since he came to power after independence from Britain in 1980.
His absence has raised the level of uncertainty in a country already in economic and political turmoil.
Frustration has been rising over the state of the economy and allegations of government corruption.

Turkish Tanks Cross Into Northern Syria To Attack Islamic State

Turkish tanks have crossed into northern Syria from Kilis Province to attack Islamic State.

Reports suggest at least 20 tanks, trucks and other armoured vehicles crossed the border near the Turkish village of Cobanbey, which lies across from the Syrian village of Al-Rai.

A Reuters cameraman in the area heard a repeated booming sound and saw plumes of smoke rising from the Syrian side of the border.

State media said troops were providing support to Syrian opposition fighters in al Rai, after ridding northern villages of extremists in its intervention.

Police Say Briton Samia Shahid Was Raped Before 'Honour Killing'

A British woman was raped before allegedly being strangled to death by her ex-husband, police have said.
Samia Shahid, from Bradford, was found dead in July in a village in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province.
Her death was assumed to be of natural causes and the 28-year-old was buried in a local cemetery.
But an inquiry was ordered after Ms Shahid's husband, Mukhtar Kazim, accused her family of killing her because she divorced her first husband in 2014 and married him.
It was concluded that Ms Shahid - who is of Pakistani origin - had been strangled and her first husband Mohammad Shakeel was detained as the prime suspect.

Police spokeswoman Nabila Ghazanfar said a forensic examination confirmed Ms Shahid was raped before her death.
Mr Kazim has also accused Ms Shahid's family of luring her back to Pakistan by claiming her father was critically ill.
The father has also been detained by police.
Ms Ghazanfar said a police chief has been suspended for mishandling the case and allowing Ms Shahid's mother and sister to leave the country.
She added investigators want them to return for questioning.

World's Longest Glass Bridge In China Closes After Visitor Surge

The world's longest glass bridge has closed within two weeks of opening after being overwhelmed by the number of visitors.

More than 10,000 people flocked to the bridge in China's Hunan province every day, overwhelming managers who had planned to limit visitors to no more than 8,000, local media said.

The bridge is undergoing "an internal system upgrade", the Xinhua News service quoted officials as saying.

It is not clear when the bridge will reopen.
