Profile: Jean-Pierre Bemba, DR Congo's ex-rebel and vice-president

Jean-Pierre Bemba had an extremely privileged childhood in one of the world's poorest countries but this has not saved him from being convicted of war crimes at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.
Mr Bemba spent his youth between the Belgian and Congolese capitals - Brussels and Kinshasa - and the small remote town of Gbadolite in northern Democratic Republic of Congo known as "Versailles in the Jungle".
This was the home and last refuge of the late Congolese leader Mobutu Sese Seko.
Mr Bemba's father, the successful businessman Bemba Saolona, was very close to the former dictator.
But for him business was all that really mattered.
When Laurent Kabila's rebel force overthrew Mobutu and marched into Kinshasa in May 1997, Saolona was briefly appointed a finance minister in the new regime.

Difficult relationship

Father and son, however, have not always seen eye to eye.
Mr Bemba, who at a very young age lost his mother and has had difficult relations with his father and stepmothers, explicitly criticised his father's acquaintance with Mr Kabila in his book The Choice of Freedom.
A great admirer of controversial French businessman Bernard Tapie and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the young Bemba sought other father figures.
Perhaps his greatest influence was Mobutu himself, who employed him at the age of 30 as his personal assistant in the early 1990s.
  • Son of famous businessman
  • Former assistant to Mobutu Sese Seko
  • 1998: Helped by Uganda to form MLC rebel group
  • 2003: Becomes vice-president under peace deal
  • 2006: Loses run-off election to President Joseph Kabila but gets most votes in western DR Congo, including Kinshasa
  • 2007: Flees to Belgium after clashes in Kinshasa
  • 2008: Arrested in Brussels and handed over to ICC
  • 2010: Trial begins
  • 2016: Found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity
  • 2016: Convicted of bribing ICC prosecution witness

Another person central to his roundabout journey to becoming DR Congo's vice-president was Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
As the government battled Rwanda-backed rebel groups in eastern DR Congo, Mr Museveni helped Mr Bemba open up a new front.
He supplied troops, equipment and training when Mr Bemba launched his rebel group, the Movement for the Liberation of Congo (MLC), in 1998.
In only a few months, the MLC managed to capture northern DR Congo.
The military pressure he put on Mr Kabila's government eventually led to a peace deal that became the basis of a power-sharing government.
As a rebel leader, Mr Bemba became one of four vice-presidents.
After he laid down his arms in 2003, Mr Bemba was sworn in back home as a vice-president in charge of finance in the interim administration.
He became increasingly influential, gaining the support of a number of historic political figures in DR Congo, and stood for the country's presidency in 2006 - against Laurent Kabila's son, Joseph.
But he was ultimately deserted by many allies who blamed his "oversized ego" for withdrawing their support.
He managed to take the incumbent to a second round, polling especially well in western DR Congo, including the capital, Kinshasa, where many see the Swahili-speaking Kabilas as foreigners.
He claimed the run-off was rigged and was accused of refusing to disarm his militia and of unleashing violence in Kinshasa.
Mr Bemba has always denied the charges.

Reign of terror

He was then accused of treason after his bodyguards and the army clashed in Kinshasa in March 2007.
He fled to his childhood retreat of Belgium but this time it was no safe haven.
He was arrested in May 2008 in Brussels and handed over to the ICC two months later.
A characteristic Mr Bemba shares with his father the knack of making money.
He holds an MBA from a prestigious business school in Brussels and kept his economic activities running throughout the war: Looking after family-owned coffee plantations and wood factories.
Former allies claim most of Mr Bemba's fortune comes from gifts from African leaders such as Libya's Muammar Gaddafi.

Worst thief ever? Suspect 'hides stolen blind in trousers'

Police have released an image of a man suspected of stealing a Venetian blind by stuffing it down one trouser leg and up the back of his jacket.
The alleged theft took place between 2pm and 2.25pm on 16 October at the Dunelm Mill store in Northampton's St James Mill Road.
Staff spotted him leaving the store - apparently without paying - and followed him up a nearby canal path where he dropped the blind and ran off.
Police want to speak to the man about the alleged theft.
Anyone with information can contact Northamptonshire Police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

MP calls for child migrant tooth age checks

A Tory MP who called for tooth tests to check the age of child migrants from Calais has been condemned by dentists.
David Davies called for checks after seeing pictures of the arrival of 14 teenagers from Calais on Monday saying they did not look like children and adding: "I hope British hospitality is not being abused."
Mr Davies, chairman of the Commons Welsh Affairs select committee, demanded mandatory dental checks for child migrants to reassure the public the system was not being exploited.
But the British Dental Association said the checks would be "inappropriate and unethical".
They dispute claims dental radiographs can accurately say if someone has reached 18 years of age.
A spokesman said: "We are vigorously opposed to the use of dental X-rays to determine whether asylum seekers have reached 18.
"It's not only an inaccurate method for assessing age, but it is both inappropriate and unethical to take radiographs of people when there is no health benefit for them.
"X-rays taken for a clinically justified reason must not be used for another purpose without the patient's informed consent, without coercion and in full knowledge of how the radiograph will be used and by whom."
Mr Davies defended his comments saying: "We must not be naive about this. It's no good Lily Allen turning up with
tears in her eyes and all the rest of it - we need to be quite hard-nosed here."
The Monmouth MP told the Radio 4 Today programme: "People are desperate, I understand that, and they will say what they need to
say to get in.
"When I was in the camp in Calais there were caravans with notices on saying 'Come here, we will coach you in what to say to get into the UK'."
He added: "People in Britain, I think, want to help children but we don't want to be taken for a free ride either by people who seem to have got to the front of the queue even though they clearly look, in some cases, a lot older than

The Jungle refugee camp could be closed imminently after a French court rejected an appeal from aid groups to delay the clearance.
French authorities are expected to empty the migrant camp in Calais in the coming weeks and dismantle it by the start of winter.

US Election: Trump invites Obama's half-brother to debate

The final live US presidential debate is to be given extra spice after Donald Trump invited Barack Obama's half-brother along to the event.
As a Trump supporter, Malik Obama has already told US media the tycoon "can make America great again".
And in an interview with the New York Post, Mr Trump said Malik Obama, who splits his time between Kenya and the US, "gets it far better than his brother".
The previous live events were vitriolic affairs - and the upcoming clash at the University of Nevada is likely to be just as tense.

Current polls put Mrs Clinton ahead, leaving the billionaire businessman with a tough battle to win over undecided voters.
Ahead of the debate, Mr Trump has faced claims of sexual misconduct from a number of women, including a former contestant on the US version of The Apprentice.
He has denied the claims, saying they are "outright lies" and his wife, Melania, has defended him in an interview where she accused the claimants of being attention seekers making "damaging and unfair" accusations.
Mr Trump has also claimed the 8 November election will be rigged in favour of Mrs Clinton, saying: "The election is being rigged by corrupt media pushing completely false allegations and outright lies in an effort to elect her president."
This prompted Mr Obama to tell the Republican to "stop whining".
"If you start whining before the game's even over; if whenever things are going badly for you and you lose, you start blaming somebody else, then you don't have what it takes to be in this job," he said.
Mrs Clinton's campaign has also been hit by controversy over her use of her private email while Secretary of State,  which Mr Trump has branded a scandal "worse than Watergate".
The 90-minute debate will be hosted by Fox News' Chris Wallace and will cover six topics - debt and entitlements, immigration, economy, the Supreme Court, foreign hotspots and fitness to be president.

Kim Kardashian taking time off after Paris burglary, assistant reveals

Kim Kardashian West is having "much needed time off" from the limelight after she was robbed at gunpoint in a Paris hotel room, her assistant has revealed.
The reality TV star has been avoiding social media in the two weeks since she was tied up by raiders who made off with £8m of jewellery.
Her assistant, Stephanie Shepherd, has now posted a message on Kardashian West's subscription website and app that suggests she is still too traumatised to return to the spotlight.

"Keeks is taking some much-needed time off.
"But not to worry. We've called upon Kim's closest friends, fam and yours truly to serve up some exclusives. Stay tuned for new posts and app takeovers!"

In an interview for the Ellen DeGeneres Show last week, Khloe Kardashian said her sister was unwell.
"It's incredibly traumatic what happened to her," she said. "But our family is super close and great and we'll get through it together."
The star was bound and gagged while her attackers took jewellery belonging to her and her husband Kanye West, who cut short a gig in the US when he was told about the raid.

The day after the attack, police in Paris said she had made herself a target by flaunting her lifestyle.
All the Kardashian sisters have their own paid mobile app and website, offering fans a deeper glimpse into their personal lives - including behind-the-scenes videos, diaries and fashion tips.

Woman dies after stabbing attack by 'up to 11 men' in Newcastle

A woman has died after being stabbed in the street during a daylight attack by "10 or 11 men" in Newcastle.
Jodie Wilkinson, 27 and from Newcastle, was attacked during an apparent argument in Stanhope Street on Monday afternoon.
Ms Wilkinson's male companion, 25, was also stabbed but has since been released from hospital.
The 10 or 11 attackers fled to an address in the nearby Queens Court area, police said.
No weapon has been found.
Three men, aged 22, 25 and 25, have been arrested in connection with the incident but Northumbria Police have appealed for help in finding others.
Chief Superintendent David Felton said: "It was 3.50pm and schools had not long finished and people were walking,
driving and cycling in the area.
"Any tiny piece of information could be key so please don't hesitate in contacting us.
"The incident itself would have looked like a group of people fighting, like an altercation of some kind, and there would have been shouting and fighting."
Mr Felton also tried to reassure the public, saying: "Although the motive behind the attack is still being investigated, we believe it potentially could have been some kind of dispute.
"I want to reassure the community that we do not believe there is any risk to the general public."
Ms Wilkinson's sister, Amy, described her as a devoted aunt and sister.
"She would do anything for anyone and we've got no idea why someone would take her life," she said.
"All we ask is at this stage anyone with information, no matter how small, to please come forward and assist the police."
Anyone with information should ring 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 08000 555 111.

Paris bombing suspect's brother urges him to break silence

The brother of the main suspect connected with the attacks on Paris in November 2015 has appealed to his brother to speak out.
Salah Abdeslam's two lawyers have both declared they can no longer defend him because he refuses to answer questions.
The 27-year-old is the only surviving member of the group behind the 13 November attack at a Paris concert hall, bars and the national stadium that left 130 people dead and scores injured.
Now, his brother Mohamed, who visits his sibling every three months, said on French radio station RTL: "I ask my brother to speak.

"During my visits to Belgium, I really saw a Salah Abdeslam who was ready to talk... A few months later, it feels like I am looking at another person.
"I can confirm that Salah is more withdrawn, more closed now."
Abdeslam was transferred to France from Belgium in April, after a long manhunt.
He has since refused to answer questions and his then lawyer said he believed his client would continue to claim the right to remain silent.
Mohamed Abdeslam said in the same interview: "His incarceration, the extremely difficult conditions of his detention, his withdrawal into himself; I sometimes have the impression he is more radicalised now, rather than de-radicalised."
The sibling said he was anxious for his brother's trial to go ahead but said "it would be a disappointment for us all" if Salah remained silent.
The last surviving suspect is alleged to have been part of an Islamic State-connected group.
He was the driver of the three suicide bombers who blew themselves up outside the Stade de France stadium.
He fled Paris and escaped to Belgium the next day, later telling investigators he had also wanted to blow himself up at the Stade de France but then changed his mind.
The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the Paris atrocity, one of a string of attacks claimed by the jihadists that have put Europe on edge.
