Jury convicts Thomas Mair of murdering UK lawmaker Jo Cox

A jury has found a man with white supremacist views guilty of murdering Labour lawmaker Jo Cox a week before Britain's EU membership referendum.

Jurors at London's Central Criminal Court deliberated for less than two houA white supremacist who shot and stabbed a pro-European U.K. lawmaker while shouting "Britain first" was convicted of murder by a jury on Wednesday.
Judge Alan Wilkie sentenced Thomas Mair to life without parole for killing Jo Cox, in what prosecutors called an act of terrorism.
The 41-year-old Labour member of Parliament was attacked in June outside a library as she prepared to meet residents of the area she represented in northern England.
The murder, a week before Britain's referendum on European Union membership, shocked the country. Coxwas the first British lawmaker killed in office in a quarter of a century.
Jurors at London's Central Criminal Court deliberated for less than two hours before unanimously finding 53-year-old Mair guilty of firing three shots at Cox with a sawn-off .22 rifle and stabbing her 15 times.
The defendant did not visibly react as he was convicted of murdering Cox and wounding 77-year-old Bernard Kenny, a passer-by who was stabbed as he tried to stop the attack. Mair was also found guilty of having a gun and a dagger.
Cox had been a prominent voice arguing for Britain to remain in the EU, during a divisive and often angry referendum campaign that focused heavily on the issue of immigration.
At his first court hearing, Mair gave his name as "death to traitors, freedom for Britain." Prosecutors said his home was full of Nazi literature and memorabilia, and his computer revealed an interest in far right, anti-Semitic and neo-Nazi politics.
Jurors were told that Mair had pleaded not guilty, but his lawyers presented no evidence in his defense.
Mair, who did not speak during his trial, asked to address the court after the verdict. The judge refused.
Wilkie said the murder had been carried out to advance a political cause "of violent white supremacism associated with Nazism."
He said Mair pretended to be a patriot — but that Jo Cox was the true patriot.
Sue Hemming, head of special crime and counter-terrorism at the Crown Prosecution Service, said Mair's crimes "were nothing less than acts of terrorism designed to advance his twisted ideology."
Cox's widower Brendan Cox told the court the family did not seek retribution against her killer.
"We feel nothing but pity for him that his life was so devoid of love and filled with hatred, his only way of finding meaning was to attack a woman who represented all that was good about the country in an act of supreme cowardice," Cox said.rs before finding Thomas Mair guilty on Wednesday.
Cox was shot and stabbed to death in June in the area of northern England that she represented. Witnesses said Mair shouted "Britain First" as he attacked her.
At his first court hearing he gave his name as "death to traitors, freedom for Britain."
Prosecutors said his home was full of Nazi literature and memorabilia.

Sky Views: A message to so-called 'journalists'

We're re-learning how to stop someone "bleeding out" from a catastrophic wound, to tourniquet under fire and try not to get the giggles when the fake guts spilling into the Scottish instructor's T-shirt look like Cumberland sausages.
We have to do these courses every three years. The courses save lives. Anyone who covers a war zone for a company like Sky News needs to have some basic understanding of how to stay alive when the going gets a bit tough.
There's lots of discussion about the decisions that take us into harm's way. About the motivations for risking life when "the punter" may be indifferent to the truth on the ground in Mosul, or some other far-flung, fly-blown khazi of a country that few can find on a map.
The British tabloids are as vindictive as they are pernicious. Deliberately misinforming debate about race, immigration, economic policy - you name it, they bend it.
Sam Kiley
Let's be clear. Journalists (we call ourselves hacks) are not charity workers. We are motivated by ego, by the lust for glory. And a glory in lust (war correspondents are sexier than accountants). Careers are fed the carrion of our fellow human beings.
We are vultures.
But many have died in pursuit of these base instincts.
Men like Sky cameraman Mick Deane who, at the age of 62, filmed a government massacre on the streets of Cairo from the perspective of the victims and paid with his life for this commitment.
Lately in Mosul, colleagues like Stuart Ramsay and his team have been shot at, blown up, and subjected to hours of mortal terror in an effort to enlighten the viewer and reader.
Writing about Vietnam, Michael Herr said in Dispatches that "war is what we had instead of happy childhoods", or something like that. I remember but I have not checked.
Anyone who has been at war will understand that.
Yes, being where history is happening is a very powerful drug. I admit to being an addict.
But I am also proud of being part of a clan that believes that the truth is worth discovering and sometimes it can be horrifying to find it out.
I do not consider many "journalists" who work in some parts of the print newspaper industry to be part of that clan.
It's risky to say so as the British tabloids are as vindictive as they are pernicious. Deliberately misinforming debate about race, immigration, economic policy - you name it, they bend it.
But we live in a Chinese curse. In interesting times.
Fascism is on the rise. Outright racists look set to get into the highest offices in the land in America. It's now conceivable that the National Front may take the French presidency. And the so-called "liberal elite" is cowering.
Nothing seems to silence rational fact-driven debate like that invocation that "the people have spoken".
Yes, there was a (non-mandatory) referendum on Brexit that went against the Remainers. Yes, Donald Trump has been elected democratically.
But these events have been seen, by some, as a licence for bigots to express their hitherto hidden if muffled views.
Many newspapers in this country are fuelling this bigotry with inaccurate nasty articles. They know who they are.
Sometimes I despise what they say. But I would die for their right to say it.
I'm not sure that the same could be said for all those who claim to be journalists. Give me a hack any day.

Trump: I'd love to make Israel-Palestine peace deal

US President-elect Donald Trump has said he would "love" to reach a peace deal between Israel and Palestine, adding that he would appoint his son-in-law as a Middle East envoy and help broker a deal after he takes charge at the White House.
While Trump said both sides would have to "give up something" during the negotiations to reach an acceptable deal, he promised that he would exercise the US veto "100 percent" of the time at the Security Council.
"I would love to be the one who made peace with Israel and the Palestinians, that would be such a great achievement," Trump told the New York Timeson Tuesday.
"A lot of people tell me, really great people tell me, that it's impossible, you can't do it. I disagree. I think you can make peace."
It is not the first time Trump has expressed his desire to reach an agreement between the two parties.

French terror suspects: Theme park and police among targets

A theme park was among the targets listed by terror suspects arrested in France at the weekend, according to French media.
An area described as having a high number of police officers was also mentioned, iTele reported.
The seven suspects - of French, Moroccan and Afghan origin and aged between 29 and 38 - were detained in the southern port city of Marseilles and the eastern city of Strasbourg overnight on Saturday and Sunday.
The raids followed an eight-month investigation by French security services.
On Monday, interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve told reporters that the arrests prevented "a terrorist act that had been envisaged for a long time on our soil".

Two handguns, an automatic pistol, a machine pistol and jihadist propaganda were found during the raids.
One of the suspects arrested in Strasbourg, named as Yasin B, 38, was an official at a school who went to Syria via Cyprus in 2015, possibly using school holidays to avoid arousing suspicion, iTele said.
During his stay, he and an accomplice, who was also arrested, were taught combat techniques and the art of concealment, the news outlet reported.
Meanwhile, two of those arrested in Marseilles were released on Tuesday.
They had been suspected of helping to shelter a Moroccan identified as Hicham E, who is thought to have financed the group and is still being held by police.
A total of 418 people have been arrested in France for suspected links to terror networks since the start of the year, including 43 people this month alone.
The country remains in a state of emergency a year after Islamic State jihadists killed 130 people in Paris in co-ordinated attacks.
