Burundi Protests

Several hundred supporters of the president of Burundi, Pierre Nkurunziza, have protested against plans by the African Union to deploy peacekeepers there.

Burundi descended into violence in April when Mr Nkurunziza announced he would run for a third term. He was re-elected in July.

The demonstration in the capital Bujumbura was led by the vice president, Gaston Sindimwo, who insisted the army is capable of halting the violence and protecting all Burundians.

Other protests were held in Ngonzi province - a stronghold of the ruling party.
