Labour Resignation: McKinnell Quits Shadow Role

The Newcastle North MP is the fourth person to quit from Jeremy Corbyn's shadow cabinet following a controversial reshuffle, which saw more moderate members replaced by his left-wing allies, including an opponent of the Trident nuclear deterrent being appointed to the defence brief.
In a letter to Mr Corbyn, the former employment solicitor told the party leader she had shared his optimism for the 'new kind of politics' he "spoke so compellingly about".
"However, as events have unfolded over recent weeks, my concerns about the direction and internal conflict within the Labour Party have only grown and I fear this is taking us down an increasingly negative path," she added.
Asked about Ms McKinnell's resignation, a spokesman for the Labour leader said he would "thank her for her service".
