In the never-ending battle for smartphone camera supremacy, Apple is understandably keen to maintain its position as the world’s most popular camera. Now, according to a report from AppleInsider, famously accurate KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a note to investors containing some exciting details about the next generation of Apple’s supersized flagship handset, the iPhone 7 Plus.
Last April, Apple made a $20 million purchase of the camera technology company LinX Computational Imaging Ltd and, in so doing, acquired technologies enabling the use of multiple cameras which can combine their outputs into a single image with claimed DSLR-like quality.
As I reported in June of last year, Xiaru Wen, CEO of Altek Corp has gone on record to state that Apple had been attempting to build a dual-camera solution for three years before eventually purchasing LinX in order to overcome some technical barriers.
According to the AppleInsider report, Kuo claims Apple is now ready to begin implementing the dual camera technology in the iPhone 7 Plus. He expects a pair of 12 megapixel sensors, one with an image stabilised wide angle lens and the other with a 2-3x telephoto lens.
This configuration would enable one camera to capture a wide field of view, similar to how current models do now, while the second is able to bring distant objects closer with the new telephoto lens. This could also provide a more pleasing result for portraits with less distortion of facial features.
