w Jersey Governor Chris Christie has endorsed Donald Trump for president - the first major party figure to back the billionaire.
"There is no one who is better prepared to provide America with the strong leadership that it needs both at home and around the world than Donald Trump," said the former White House contender.
He appeared with Republican presidential hopeful Trump at a specially arranged media conference in Fort Worth, Texas.
"The best person to beat Hillary Clinton in November on that stage last night is undoubtedly Donald Trump," he said.
"They do not know the playbook with Donald Trump because he is rewriting the playbook."
Sky's Cordelia Lynch, speaking in Washington, said: "Now you have seen him seizing the moment and with someone beside him who can hit hard.
"If Trump is the agitator-in-chief, then Christie will be the bully-boy behind him, hitting hard at his opponents."
It was Trump's biggest endorsement from a mainstream Republican to date.
The front-runner in the race, Trump, 69, has never held public office and has campaigned as a political outsider.
The endorsement of the New Jersey governor gives Trump, from neighboring New York, a lift ahead of next week's crucial Super Tuesday nominating contests.
Trump, a brash former reality TV show host, has now won three straight nominating contests in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada.
Those wins have convinced some mainstream Republicans that he may have too much momentum to be stopped.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is battling US Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont for the Democratic nomination.
